Green Waste Composting

Hi, I’m Annie. Hi, I’m Claire.  Hi, I’m Jenny.  Welcome to Chung-Ping.                 .

Annie:  Claire, this is our school’s green waste composting area.

Clare:  What is green waste composting?

Annie:  I don’t know clearly.  Let’s ask the teacher.

Claire:  OK!  Let’s go!

Annie:  Teacher Jenny, Claire and I want to know green waste composting.

Jenny:  No problem!  Green waste means fallen leaves, vegetables and fruit scraps.  Green waste composting is the process of composting leaves, vegetables, and fruit scraps.  Then it is back into soil.  When we make it, we have to consider its pH value and…

Claire:  Excuse me, who can tell me what pH value is?

Annie:  I can tell you the answer.  PH value is a measure of the degree to which a solution is acidic or alkaline.  Green waste composting also involves temperature, oxygen content, and water, fertilization.  After accumulation, the green waste will be fermented by germs or worms.

Claire:  So, the products are organic fertilizers?

Jenny:  That’s right!  In the process of decomposing, water, air, and microoganism will influence the speed of it.

Claire:  Wow, green waste composting is interesting!

Annie: Teacher Jenny,  why do we use green waste composting?

Jenny:  Green waste composting can reduce trash and improve soil.  In addition, it can produce organic fertilizers. In the process of decomposing, it causes heat of 70 degrees and the heat can kill germs, bugs’ eggs, and seeds of weeds.  So, it’s clean.  You can touch it.

Besides, green waste composting is aerobic composting, so it does not only smell good but also smell the fragrance of soil.

Annie:  Thank you for telling us so much information.

Jenny:  You are welcome.  I hope everyone can know green waste composting.

Let’s review the process of composting

Annie:  First, put fallen leaves in this area.  If the degree of decomposition, we ca add vegetable and fruit scraps.

Claire: If it doesn’t rain, we have to spray water to keep wet every two to three days.

Annie: Remember to stir to increase oxygen content because green waste composting is aerobic composting.

Claire: In the process, organic matters of fallen leaves will be mineralized and the volume and weight of fallen leaves will be decreasing.

Annie: The color of composting materials will get darker and darker.  Organic matters are almost decomposed.  It looks like black gold.
