Zhongping Butterfly Garden

Song    Fly, fly, fly the butterfly,

In the meadow is flying high

In the garden is flying low

Fly, fly, fly the butterfly.

Good morning, everyone. Welcome to Zhongping Elementary School.

A: I¡¦m _____________, a student in the fifth grade here.

B: I¡¦m _____________, the environmental docent today.

A: Where are we now?

B: We are now in Zhongping Butterfly Garden.

A: I remember it was a plum garden here. So the plum trees all disappeared?

B: No! No! No! The plum trees are still here. See? They are just over there.

A: So why did we change the plum garden into the butterfly garden?

B: It was our principal¡¦s idea. It¡¦s a pity that the place used to be a blind spot for many years. Our principal wants to use the space more wisely ,so he decides to create a place with ecosystem diversity.

A: Ecosystem diversity? What is that? Is that important?

B: An ecosystem includes all the living things in an area. The living things here are plants and animals. These plants and animals in a given area are dependent on each other for their survival. As a result, they can make a food chain by biodiversity. No doubt, ecosystem diversity is quite important.

A: No wonder I always can see a lot of insects and creatures on campus. But the butterfly garden here is quite different from others. It is open, so I didn¡¦t see any nets here.

B: That¡¦s right. We hope butterflies can live happily, so we set them free. We just prepare their favorite food, when they are hungry, they will fly back for food.

A: I see. Butterflies will come when flowers are in efflorescence.

B: I can¡¦t agree with you more.

A: Now, I don¡¦t see many butterflies here. They must be playing outside.

B: Maybe. To attract the butterflies, we plant some honey plants, like Star Clusters, Common Lantanas, Blood-flower Milkweeds, and Spanish Needles.

A: These flowers bloom for all seasons, don¡¦t they?

B: Yes, they do. These honey plants usually have bright colors, and the adult butterflies love them a lot.

A: How about the caterpillars? What¡¦s their favorite food?

B: The caterpillars feed on the larval host plants and start to grow. Each kind of caterpillar has its own favorite leaf. If you are really interested in this, you can buy a book of butterfly illustration and study it.

A: Thanks for your suggestion. I¡¦ll think about it, because I really want to know more about them.

B: As I know, there were about 400 species of butterflies in Taiwan, so Taiwan used to be called "The kingdom of Butterfly". However, this title no longer exists.

A: How come? What happened? Where are the butterflies?

B: Because of the population growth, development of land, and the habitat destruction, the butterflies are crying.

A: We have to try our best to protect the butterflies and take back the reputation.
B: Let¡¦s work together to help the most beautiful insects ¡V butterflies.

A: Now we have some questions for you. If you know the answer, please raise your hand. If your answer is correct, you can get a gift.

B: Question 1: In order to attract the adult butterflies, what do we plant here?

A: (honey plants)  Good job.

B: Question 2: What¡¦s the caterpillar¡¦s favorite food?
A: (
larval host plants / leaves)  Bravo!

B: How many species of butterflies were there in Taiwan before?

A: (400)  Amazing.

Thanks for your listening. Hope you will enjoy the visit here today.
